Xasan Sheekh Maxamuud, also known as Xasan Sheekh Maxamud, was a Somali politician and military officer who served as the President of Somalia from 2012 to 2017. He was born on November 29, 1961, in south-central Somalia and holds a degree in law from Somali National University.
Xasan Sheekh Maxamuud was a member of the Hawiye clan and was involved in the Somali National Movement that fought against the military dictatorship of Siad Barre in the 1980s. After the collapse of the Barre regime in 1991, Maxamuud became involved in various political and civic organizations.
In 2012, Xasan Sheekh Maxamuud was elected as the President of Somalia by the Somali Federal Parliament for a four-year term. During his presidency, he was credited with improving Somalia's relationship with its neighbors and the international community, overseeing the drafting of a new constitution, and supporting efforts to rebuild the country's infrastructure.
However, his presidency was also marked by ongoing violence and instability, particularly related to Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab, and internal power struggles within the Somali government. Xasan Sheekh Maxamuud's term in office ended in 2017, and he was succeeded by Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, also known as Farmajo.
